Union Lake is one of the deepest and cleanest lakes in Oakland County. It runs 465 acres, it is an all sports lake, the basin drops past 100 feet, and on a calm day you can see 15 or 20 feet straight down. The middle of the lake is beautiful. Deep clear lakes like Union fool people. Because the bottom drops off fast into that 100 foot basin, almost all the plant growth crowds into the shallow near shore band, the coves, and the soft bottom around docks and swim ladders. Eurasian milfoil and thick pondweed are the usual offenders, and they top out first right there, then flop over the surface exactly where you launch and where the kids get in. That is the growth we cut and harvest. We run the cut weed off the water so it is not left to rot and wash back onto your beach. If your neighbors are dragging weed off the shelf the whole way out to the sandbar, that is the stretch that needs clearing.
Cutting buys you the season. Root removal buys you longer. Milfoil grows right back from what is left in the sediment, so for the spots that matter most, the swim area, the boat well, the end of the dock, we pull the plant and its roots so it does not come back twice as thick. And under all of it sits the muck, that black soupy layer of years of dead weed and leaves that swallows your feet and turns sour by August. On a lake this clean, nothing ruins the day faster than stepping off your ladder into a foot of muck. We dredge it out and haul it off so you get firm bottom and clear water back at your own frontage.
