Clearing weeds and muck on Cass Lake

Cass Lake is the biggest and deepest water in Oakland County, 1,280 acres with a hole that drops past 120 feet out in the middle. Here is the thing though, almost nobody has a weed problem in that deep water. The trouble sits in the first ten feet off your seawall, in the back bays, and down the canals that run toward Otter, Sylvan and Loon. That shallow shelf is where the milfoil mats up and where the muck settles, and it is exactly where your dock, your swim ladder and your boat well happen to be.

Aqua Contracting works these Oakland County lakes for a living. We are a small owner run outfit out of Highland run by Shea, and most days it is one of our crew guys in the water doing the cutting, pulling and dredging while you get your weekend back. We do not spray chemicals. We take the weeds and the muck out of the lake, so the fix you are paying for is one you can actually see standing on your own dock.

What Cass Lake throws at you

The weed that gets most Cass Lake owners on the phone is Eurasian milfoil, with curly leaf pondweed and starry stonewort right behind it. Zebra mussels have made the water clear enough that sunlight reaches the bottom of that shallow shelf, so the weeds come in thick and come in early. Our weed cutting and harvesting boat mows the mats off your frontage and hauls the cuttings out of the lake instead of leaving them to break loose, drift down to the sandbar and rot. For the milfoil that keeps coming back a few weeks after every cut, that is a root problem, and our root removal pulls the whole plant, root ball and all, out of the peat around your dock and swim area so it does not just spring back on you.

The muck is its own animal on Cass. The main basin is sand and marl, but the bays and the canals feeding toward Sylvan and Loon are pulpy peat, and decades of dead weed and leaves have settled into a soft black layer that swallows your foot to the ankle. Our muck removal and dredging work digs that organic sludge out of the canal ends, the back bays and the shallow boat wells and gives you firm bottom and real depth back where you actually use the water. If your kids will not swim off the dock because the bottom feels like pudding, that is the muck, and honestly that is the part of the job we like most.

Call Shea and ask. You get a straight answer on what your Cass Lake frontage needs.

Just your frontage. Cass Lake is 1,280 acres and a full all sports lake, so anything lake wide is a township and lake association call. We work the water you own and use, meaning your shoreline, your dock, your swim area, your boat well and the canal behind your place. Most jobs run a set width off the seawall out to where the bottom drops off.
