Clearing weeds and muck on Pontiac Lake

Pontiac Lake is one of the biggest all sports lakes in Oakland County, better than 600 acres sitting mostly in White Lake Township with a corner reaching into Waterford. It is a busy lake. Ski boats, tubers, kayakers, and a public launch running out of the recreation area all summer long. A lake like that looks great from the road, but if your dock sits on one of the shallow shelves you already know what happens by July. The weeds come up thick and the bottom turns to soft muck under your feet.

We are Aqua Contracting, based right up the road in Highland. We are owner run. Shea leads the outfit and runs a crew, so it will not always be him standing on your shoreline, but it will always be our own people doing the work. We clear Oakland County lakes for a living and Pontiac Lake is right in our backyard.

What Pontiac Lake throws at you

Here is what we see on Pontiac Lake. The lake runs deep in the middle, better than 30 feet in spots, but a lot of the shoreline sits shallow and warm, and that is exactly where the aquatic weeds take hold. By midsummer the milfoil and pondweed mat up around docks, swim areas, and the mouths of the canals, and swimmers walk out of the water dragging green off their legs. All the runoff and boat traffic on a lake this busy feeds the growth, and over the years that settles into the bottom and turns your shallows into the kind of soft black muck you sink into past your ankles.

We handle it three ways depending on what your frontage needs. Weed cutting and harvesting is the fast fix. We cut the growth down at the water and haul it out by the boatload so it is gone, not left to sink and rot back into the lake. For the weeds that keep coming back in the same spot every year, we go after the root and pull the whole plant so it does not regrow on you by August. And where the bottom has already gone soft, we do muck removal and dredging to take out the built up sludge and silt and get you back down to a firm bottom you actually want to stand on. Every job is different. A weedy swim area off White Lake Township is a different animal than a silted in canal, so we come look at your shoreline and tell you straight what it needs.

Growth really takes off once the water warms up in June and peaks through July and August. Getting on the schedule in late spring lets us knock the weeds back before they mat over and before your best swimming weeks. That said, we work Pontiac Lake all through the open season, so if it is already thick when you call, we can still get out there and clear it.
